Classic sporting style with the polo shirt
The polo shirt needs no introduction. Smarter than a T-shirt
and sportier than a buttoned shirt
, long and short-sleeved polos are most often seen in either a Piqué knit or a soft jersey cotton fabric. Similarly, the traditional men’s polo features a lightly ribbed and folded collar, a 3-button placket and no chest pocket. Things have changed since the original polo however, with the arrival of loose polyester models and zip-up collars. There’s even a long-sleeve winter model in thick fleece with a raised collar, making it more of a polo-pullover hybrid than a classic polo shirt.
Colours, stripes and prints: what’s the best polo for you?
Polo colours tend to move with the seasons, with white, Bordeaux or bright colours for the summer and more sombre tones when it starts to get colder. Classic monochrome colours will be the easiest to pair with your wardrobe, from jeans
to smarter trousers
. For an elegantly casual look, try one under a V-neck pullover and a pair of chinos. Twin-colour polos are also versatile, featuring a few subtle contrasts under the collar, cuffs and placket to add a little flair and interest. If you want something a little more daring, though, go for a print design: rugby-type shirts and print patterns are certainly eye-catching, but tend to be a lot more casual than the traditional polo. But whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find a polo that suits your taste and your frame at a price you’ll love. Some models are available in twin or multi-packs, and sizes go up to 4XL.
